Characters

Since I am over halfway through my book decided that now would be a good time to write about the characters. I don't particularly like anyone in my book because most of them are just insane.


Mr.Lockwood is the first narrator in the story. He speaks very formal so its hard to understand and I had to write down a few words for every page. He takes up the first five chapters and a good portion of it is just his vocabulary.

Catherine is one of the main characters. I really liked her at first but then she spent five weeks at the Linton's house and turned into a polite, elegant lady. She kind of stabbed Mr. Heathcliff in the back by changing and then later saying it would degrade her to marry him and even though he is cruel you kind of feel bad for him. She ended up marrying Edgar Linton for money and her reputation. She is very whiny, cruel, and selfish but I think that she actually does love Heathcliff, but I still don't really like her at all any more.

Mr. Heathcliff is also one of the main characters. Mr. Earnshaw found Heathcliff durning his trip to Liverpool and brought him back home with him. While she lived at the Wuthering Heights, Hindley abused him and I think that's what made him so mean and vengeful. Some people expect Heathcliff to have a good side or to actually be really nice and loving deep down, but I don't think so at all. I think he is cold and cruel to the core except for his soft spot for Catherine. When Catherine said it would degrade her to marry him, he disappeared for three years and acquired a lot of money but no one know how. He still loved her even after all of that, which is really out of character for him considering he would usually try to get revenge. I am convinced that Heathcliff and Catherine's love is the only good quality they have.

Ellen Dean is the narrator for most of the book. Most of the characters in the story call her Nelly. She is the only person in the book who is not completely crazy or selfish and she is my favorite character so far. She is a servant for Catherine and the Linton's'. I really don't know what else to say about her because she doesn't talk about herself much and when she does it's usually just her opinion on something.

Hindley Earnshaw is Catherine's sister. He is really cruel to Heathcliff and often tries to manipulate people. He has a drinking problem that started when his wife Frances died. I think that after she died, he started drinking so that he wouldn't have to deal with the pain of losing her.

Cathy is the baby that Catherine had just before she died. Edgar never calls her by her real name, Catherine. He always calls her Cathy. I'm really confused about her right now because in the beginning you see her as an adult and she is kind of mean and crazy, but in the middle of the book , where you see her as a girl, she is very sweet. Something had to have happened to her to make her that way but I don't know what yet.

Linton is Isabella and Heathcliff's son. He lived with Isabella until she died when he was twelve. Then he went to live with Mr. Heathcliff. He is very weak and almost never goes outside.

Hareton is Hindley and Frances's son. He lives with Mr. Heathcliff because both of his parent's died. He doesn't know how to read at all. I think that Mr. Heathcliff is treating him bad because he is trying to get revenge on Hindley. Hindley treated Heathcliff the same way Heathcliff treats Hareton.
